Malkin needs to avoid the boo-boo's as well to ease Crosby's burden. If they both can stay healthy it's a two man race for the Art Ross.

Crosby and Malkin became the go to guys in too many situations.

A few years back my opinion of the Flyers was that they would have a tough time being a cup champ because, at the time, they used Mike Richards in so many situations.

History has proven Richards is not quite the player Sid is...but there is only so much one guy can do before he's not able to do the things everybody expects him to, at the most critical times.

Funny...I just wrote a blog about how this year is a crossroads for Sid...if you are really bored, you can read it here:

Yay, a nice penguins related article!

I'd also like to see better line matching and from the sounds of it, it appears Johnston will do everything he can to get Sid the faborable matchups. I think sutter will do fine this year. That 3rd line was the best line for the pens with sutter, Bennett, and stemp.

The burden on Crosby? Not like they have 3 centers that can all be number 1 centers on some nhl teams. Crosby has 0 burden.

Surprised at how well St. Louis did...but not at LA, CHI or Boston.

Those are regular season numbers, right...would be interesting to see playoff numbers for comparison.

Ryan, what site do you use now for advanced stats? I was using Extraskater and really liked it. Not a fan of behindthenet. Are there others?

Makes sense. Usually a productive bottom six does the trick. A pain in the butt fourth line with Goc at center should be difficult to play against. The third line should have a bit more balance this season, I'm still not expecting much out of Downie though.

I think the break should come from Malkin getting less offensive zone starts now that Bylsma doesn't use the faceoff win to James Neal play every chance he can. It should help balance out Crosby's use a good bit.

Also, at this point in time would a more productive try out go to Ryan Malone or Ville Leino?

My go to site before Extra Skater was http://stats.hockeyanalysis.com/ and even with Extra Skater I still used that site a ton.

Hockey Analysis has the very useful WOWY data. It is very easy to use as well.

Malone - he would be cheaper (I think) and plays a more physical game.

Malone is 4 years (I think) older...but his track record (substance issues aside) when he is able to play is more impressive. He's not a great +/- guy (but hey, it's a lousy stat anyway...lol)...but he was more consistent offensively for a longer period of time than Leino. Leino had one good season.

Stat that stood out to me re:13-14 Pens...

5on5...

Malkin vs Neal, almost identical TOI: Neal 153 shots, Malkin 95.

Now that Neal is gone, hopefully 71 doesn't defer so much to his new winger(s).

I don't think Neal is to blame to be honest. Malkin had 4.52 shots per game and scored a career high 50 goals with Neal on his line in 2011-12.

Leino has some of the most difficult numbers to break down as well. 29.4, 7.4, 8.7, 16.2, 10.3, 18.2, 0.0 are his shooting percentages over his career.

If healthy I go Malone as well, I was just trying to see if the Leino would spark any debate

Also a good net front guy in Kunitz. Hasn't had a good net front player on his line since.
